Makerbox 17 Print Results, Caught up now!

Back in late 2021, I received my Makerbox 17 Everything subscription. Some of my readers have noticed that I have gone through a half year’s worth of Makerboxes over the last month. So I can now say that I am caught up on my Makerbox subscription boxes! I noticed the new Makerbox shipped last week, so I should have the new box and a blog up about that sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The Everything box includes four easy-to-print filaments (Makerbox Easy) alongside four more advanced filaments (Makerbox Explorer). I will look at my results from printing these filament samples in this post.

Makerbox Easy Prints

Oversized 3D-Fuel PLA samples

3D-Fuel provided four samples of PLA for the Makerbox Easy filaments. I’ve printed samples of 3D-Fuel filaments in the past. I’ve had good results in the past printing 3D-Fuel filament and expect the same with these samples.

One cool thing I should note is that I have double-sized filament samples for the 3D-Fuel prints. I was one of the lucky people who oversized samples in this Makerbox. Rock on!

The four colors included in the Makerbox Easy collection are Cobalt Blue, Autumn Orange, Harvest Gold, and Forest Green.

The recommended print settings for this filament are:

  • Hotend Temp: 185-215 C
  • Bed Temp: None-60 C
  • Speed: 40-100 mm/s

I printed all four samples on either an Ender 3 Pro or an Ender 3 V2 with stock hotends. I printed the temp towers in a range of 190 C – 210 C. The test models were all printed at the height of .16 mm. The temp towers were all sliced using CURA, while the test models were sliced using a mixture of Cura and PrusaSlicer.

Cobalt Blue

Below is the print result from the Cobalt Blue PLA. The temp tower printed almost perfectly. I chose to print the test models at 200C.

Rober Rollin designed the Batgirl Bust model. The print turned out to be exceptional. Thanks to the extra filament, I could print this bust at its original scale. I also printed an Infinity Heart designed by Buildtower.

The color of the blue is a little darker than the picture. But I had a hard time keeping the detail and color, so I decided to focus on detail.

Autumn Orange

Up next is Autumn Orange PLA. The temp tower was once again almost perfect. I chose to print the test model at 200C based upon the tower.

A Lion-O model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. The print ended up great. The little details in this model showed up great. One thing I like about this filament is the color. It seems most of the orange filaments out there are too bright. So it is nice having a more reddish-orange. I also printed an Infinity Heart designed by Buildtower.

Harvest Gold

Harvest Gold PLA was up next. The bottom of the temp tower was a bit rough on the backside. But otherwise, the tower printed great.

An Evil Lyn model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. The print ended up great. This gold seems more gold-colored than many other gold filaments I’ve tried. The color seems a bit deeper. It gave a tremendous regal look for Lyn. I also printed an Infinity Heart designed by Buildtower.

Forest Green

Up last for the Makerbox Easy selection is Forest Green PLA. Like with the gold, there was a bit of roughness on the backside of the temp tower lower level and even a little under-extrusion. But the rest of the tower printed perfectly.

A Poison Ivy model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. This was another great print. The details for the flowers and leaves were perfect. Plus, this shade of green was excellent for Ivy. I also printed an Infinity Heart designed by Buildtower.

Overall I was more than pleased with the selection of filaments from 3D-Fuel. This was a great batch of filament to get an extra supply. One thing that became obvious is that this particular lineup of filament colors was chosen to print some charming fall models.

Makerbox Explorer Prints

Included in each Makerbox are the Explorer filament samples. Explorer contains samples of various filament types from a variety of manufacturers. I usually determine whether a filament is suitable for upcoming projects from these samples.

The test models were all printed at the height of .16 mm on an Ender 3 Pro or an Ender 3 V2 with stock hotend (unless otherwise stated). The temp towers were all sliced using CURA, while the test models were sliced using either CURA or PrusaSlicer.

WoodJet-Filled PLA+ from FilamentPM

Up first in the Explorer selection is WoodJet-Filled PLA+ from FilamentPM. I love wood-filled filament, so I was happy to see this in the Makerbox Explorer selection. This filament is an interesting combination of PLA+ and sugar beet pulp. The filament is also apparently more flexible when being bent.

The recommended print settings for this filament are:

  • Hotend Temp: 195-210 C
  • Bed Temp: 60C
  • Speed: 40-60 mm/s
  • Cooling: Not Listed
  • Other: A 0.6 mm nozzle is recommended.

I did choose to utilize a 0.6 mm nozzle to print the filament sample per the recommendation.

I printed the temp tower in a range from 195-215 C. I was delighted with how the print tower turned out. You can see below where the top two layers of the tower had major stringing. But the bottom layers had just a little bit of stringing. The 200 C level had almost no stringing at all. The towers and bridges at all levels were perfect. So I decided to use 200 C for the test models based on the tower.

WoodJet-Filled PLA+ from FilamentPM

A Groot model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. The model printed great. There was definite stringing between the legs and arms. If given more time to tweak the filament, I could probably get those worked out. But overall, I was delighted. The model has a nice dark wood look. More critical the model feels like it is a piece of wood. There are nice black flecks in the filament that add to the whole wood look. This was an excellent wood-filled filament.

Citrus Sunrise Orange HTPLA from Proto-Pasta

Next is Citrus Sunrise Orange HTPLA from Proto-Pasta. Proto-Pasta has some of the best filament and colors in their HTPLA line. In fact, I subscribe to their Endless Pastabilities to get a few rolls of HTPLA with attractive colors every couple of months. So I was more than happy to try a sample of an HTPLA color I haven’t printed with yet.

The recommended print settings for this filament are:

  • Hotend Temp: 200-220 C
  • Bed Temp: Room – 60 C
  • Speed: 40 – 60 mm/s
  • Cooling: 100%
  • Other: None

I printed the temp tower in a range from 200-220 C. The temp tower printed perfectly from base to top. There was not any stringing present, and the bridges were perfect. I printed test models at 210C to keep at the middle of the print range based on the temp tower results.

Citrus Sunrise Orange HTPLA from Proto-Pasta

A Magneto model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. The model printed great. Better yet, a slight color change can be seen in the print. This color change created a very cool visual effect in the model. The flecks of sparkle enhance the color change effect and help cover layer lines. Proto-Pasta makes some dang astonishing HTPLA filaments.

Next PLA from COEX

The third filament is Next PLA from COEX. COEX Next is a line of PLA made from recycled scrap materials that come from the production process. I love that some recycled PLA options are coming out. I’m guessing the materials used to create these rolls come from the little pieces left over before and after extruding filament colors. 

The recommended print settings for this filament are:

  • Hotend Temp: 215 – 235 C
  • Bed Temp: Room – 60 C
  • Speed: 40-60 mm/s
  • Cooling: 100%

I printed the temp tower ranging from 215 – 235 C with a bed temp of 60 C. The bottom level of the tower had some very slight stringing. The top bridge had a little bit of roughness. But overall, the towers printed great, and the middle three levels were almost perfect. So based upon the temp tower, I chose 225 C to print my model.

Next PLA from COEX

An Arnold Schwarzenegger model by Rober Rollin was used to test the filament. I was happy with the print. The detail of Arnie’s belt accessories looks excellent. However, there was what appeared to be some separation in a couple of areas, and layer lines showed up more than expected. Afterward, I checked all the bolts and lubed the z-Rod. I think a slight adjustment in my eccentric nut caused the issue seen in the model. 

Printing the Hulk Fist ornament by 3D Print Bunny allowed me to verify the layer line issue went away. So the layer lines showing up in the Arnie model had more to do with the printer than the filament. The filament itself printed great. I’ll keep this filament in mind for printing when I don’t care about the color (no color options available for this filament).

White iGlide i150-PF from Igus

Last but not least is White iGlide i150-PF from Igus. iGlide i150-PF is a new product for me. Here is what Igus has to say about it:

Our tribologically optimized filaments are up to 50 times more abrasion-resistant than standard 3D print materials. This results in higher levels of effectiveness. So you can produce prototypes and small series more quickly and cost effectively. Printed components can also quickly replace wear parts and reduce downtime periods.

This sounds like a filament I could have used back when I did network cabling and needed to make custom parts for cable runs.

The recommended print settings for this filament are:

  • Hotend Temp: 240 – 250 C
  • Bed Temp: 20 – 60 C
  • Speed: Not Listed
  • Cooling: Not Listed
  • Other: igus adhesive film is required for a non-heated print bed. (this was mistakenly put on the COEX package by Makerbox)

I printed the temp tower in a range from 240 – 250 C. It took me a few times to get the layer right. Then the tower had some issues, as seen in the tower on the left below. I also had problems with a box printing and staying adhered to the bed, which is PEI coated glass.

I decided to print another tower on my Anycubic 4Max Pro 2. The temp tower in that machine-printed perfectly. I’m not sure if I just had problems printing this on an Ender because it is a bed-slinger. The Ender has printed PLA since with no issues. Maybe the direct-drive setup of the Anycubic machine was the difference. Or perhaps I set something wrong weird in my original temp tower slicing.

But I did get a good print, and the temp tower was fantastic. The part I started to print is very durable. I can see why this material would be used for prototyping.

Conclusion

Makerbox 17 provided another great selection of filaments. It was very cool to get selected to receive an oversized portion of the Makerbox Easy filaments from 3D-Fuel. I don’t think I can choose a winner in this one. The filaments were all cool in their way. Even the filament I had problems with ended up printing excellent in the end.

The good news is I am now caught up on all of my Makerboxes! So the next post on Makerboxes will be about the new one (which I should get in the next couple of days).
